In 2016, El Torcal de Antequera was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The unique rock formations in the area were created over many years, when carbonate sedimentation left behind sediments that were accumulated at different levels, creating layers.
During your time in Torcal de Antequera, you may just be lucky enough to spot a large number of vertebrates, as a total of 116 species – amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals – live here. Among the birds, you might just spot black and black-eared wheatears, eagle owls, owlets, kestrels, crag martins and many other smaller species. In terms of reptiles, you might see oscillated lizards, ladder snakes and adders. And there are also voles, foxes, rabbits, badgers and weasels.
Torcal de Antequera also offers diverse vegetation with over 664 different species of plants. The area is also home to Dólmenes de Antequera, a megalithic site composed of Dolmen de Menga, Dolmen de Viera and Tholos del Romeral.
